plasticpreneur stories
Within this space, the PLASTIC GARAGE initiative addresses plastic recycling challenges. Plasticpreneur machines are used to experiment with recycled materials, design prototypes, and create products in a circular economy framework. The infrastructure of the makerspace supports every step, from idea creation and design to batch production, making it an ideal place for both newcomers and experienced makers to engage with sustainable solutions.
A perfect example is KNOBBY, a bit-holder for screwdrivers with a 1/4-inch bit that children and teenagers can manufacture from recycled plastic waste. The product was developed in collaboration with the design studio MARCH GUT, beginning with a 3D-printed mould before the final aluminium mould was produced. This iterative prototyping process allowed for early identification of design improvements, ensuring that Knobby met both functional and aesthetic standards while remaining sustainable and durable.
Before the final aluminum mould was created, a mould was produced via 3D printing to test Knobby in advance using the rapid prototyping method. This step allowed for early identification of potential issues and adjustments to be made to maximize the efficiency and quality of the end product.
Through this iterative approach, the Plastic Garage ensured that Knobby not only meets functional and aesthetic standards but also fulfills requirements for sustainability and durability.
Regular workshops at the PLASTIC GARAGE teach participants how to create practical, eco-friendly products like Knobby. These sessions foster collaborative learning, allowing young people and enthusiasts to develop skills in recycling, sustainability, and product design, while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.
